Cattle (Cow) Feeding & Nutrition
Cattle (Bos taurus, Bos indicus) are the most economically important livestock species in Indian dairy and beef production. India has roughly 193 million cattle — the world's largest single national herd — split between indigenous zebu breeds (Sahiwal, Gir, Tharparkar, Red Sindhi, Kankrej, Hariana) and crossbred dairy cattle (mostly Holstein-Friesian and Jersey crosses with indigenous cows). The Indian cattle population produces about 50% of national milk volume; the other half comes from buffalo.
Why cow feeding is the foundation of Indian dairy
A dairy cow's feed accounts for 60–70% of total milk production cost in most Indian operations. Get the feed right and the animal performs to her genetic potential; get it wrong and even an elite-pedigree cow will under-yield. The science is well-established but the practical application varies enormously by breed, life stage, region, and feed availability.
The standard concentrate ingredient is BIS-compliant compound cattle feed, graded as Type-1 (premium, 22% CP minimum) or Type-2 (standard, 20% CP minimum). Around this anchor, dairy farmers add green fodder, dry fodder (straw), silage, and targeted supplements like mineral mixture, bypass fat, and bypass protein for high-yielders.
Indian dairy cattle by breed
Different breeds have very different nutritional profiles and tolerances:
| Breed | Type | Typical milk yield | Heat tolerance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Holstein-Friesian (HF) cross | Exotic × indigenous | 18–25 L/day peak | Low | Highest-yielding, vulnerable to summer heat |
| Jersey cross | Exotic × indigenous | 10–15 L/day | Moderate | Smaller body, better fat % than HF |
| Sahiwal | Indigenous | 8–12 L/day | Excellent | Premier indigenous dairy breed |
| Gir | Indigenous | 6–10 L/day | Excellent | Famous for resistance and milk quality |
| Tharparkar | Indigenous | 5–8 L/day | Excellent | Desert-adapted, hardy |
| Hariana | Indigenous | 4–7 L/day (dual-purpose) | Excellent | Often used for draught work too |
For commercial dairies in heat-stress regions (Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, coastal Maharashtra), indigenous zebu breeds often deliver more usable lifetime production than HF crosses simply because they continue producing through summer when HF cows are in survival mode. See our heat stress in dairy cattle guide for the detailed management implications.
Feeding by life stage
Cow nutrition shifts dramatically across the life cycle. The articles linked below the stage cards on this page cover each phase in depth:
- Calf (0–6 months) — colostrum protocol, milk feeding schedule, calf starter feed with no urea, and prevention of calf diarrhoea (scouring)
- Heifer (6–24 months) — steady growth without over-conditioning; moderate concentrate, ample forage
- Lactating cow — covered in our feeding lactating cow ration guide, keyed to milk yield
- Dry cow (last 60 days of pregnancy) — restricted ration to prevent milk fever; detailed protocol in our dry cow management guide
- Pregnant cow (mid-late gestation) — increasing nutrient demand for the developing calf
- Adult / non-producing cow — maintenance ration only
Common feeding mistakes in Indian dairy
Several recurring problems hold back productivity on smallholder farms:
- Same ration for lactating and dry cows — wastes expensive protein on dry animals and under-feeds the milkers
- Over-reliance on dry fodder in summer — fills the rumen but delivers little energy; explains why milk yield drops in May–June
- Skipping mineral mixture — leads to silent fertility problems, milk fever at calving, and slow calf growth
- Feeding urea to calves — calves cannot process NPN; even small amounts of urea-laden adult compound feed in calf rations is dangerous
- Buying substandard compound feed to save money — adulterated feed (highlighted in our Bhaskar urea adulteration news piece) costs more in lost milk yield than the saving on the bag
