Buffalo Feeding & Nutrition

Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) are the backbone of Indian dairy — producing roughly half of India's total milk output despite making up only a third of the bovine population. India has about 110 million buffalo, the largest national herd in the world. Buffalo milk commands a premium over cow milk because of its higher fat content (6.5–8% vs cow milk at 3.5–4%), richer taste, and central role in ghee, paneer, dahi, and traditional Indian dairy products.

Why buffalo feeding deserves its own playbook

Buffaloes are physiologically different from cattle in ways that change feeding decisions:

  • Higher milk fat (6.5–8%) means each litre of milk extracts more energy from the ration than cow milk. Energy density of the feed matters more for buffalo than for cows of the same yield.
  • Higher concentrate intake per litre — a buffalo giving 8 L/day needs roughly the same concentrate as a cow giving 12 L/day
  • Lower heat tolerance despite their tough appearance — buffaloes cannot sweat effectively and need wallowing or sprinklers for summer cooling (see heat stress in dairy cattle)
  • Slower digesters of crude fibre — they extract more from coarse forage but at the cost of longer rumen retention
  • More susceptible to subclinical hypocalcaemia — high-yielding Murrah buffaloes are particularly at risk in the 24-48 hours after calving

These differences mean that a ration designed for a Holstein-Friesian cross cow will under-perform when fed to a Murrah buffalo of similar yield. Buffalo rations typically need higher fat, more concentrated protein, and very careful mineral management.

Indian buffalo breeds

BreedRegionTypical milk yieldMilk fatNotes
MurrahHaryana, Punjab, UP12–18 L/day peak7.0%Most-traded dairy buffalo nationally
Nili-RaviPunjab10–15 L/day6.8%Close cousin of Murrah
JaffrabadiGujarat (Saurashtra)8–12 L/day7.5%Largest body size; dual milk + meat
MehsanaGujarat6–10 L/day7.2%Compact, hardy
SurtiGujarat5–8 L/day8.0%Highest milk-fat breed
BhadawariUP4–6 L/day8.5%Highest fat % in India

For commercial dairies, Murrah is the dominant choice by national volume — well-supported by AI bulls, predictable yields, and broad veterinary familiarity. For traditional fat-focused operations (ghee, paneer markets), Surti and Bhadawari deliver fewer litres but higher value per litre.

Feeding lactating buffalo — the central challenge

A lactating buffalo at 8–10 L/day with 7% fat needs more concentrated energy than most Indian rations naturally deliver. The standard tools:

  • Bypass fat at 200–300 g/day during peak lactation — the single most effective intervention. Lifts both yield and fat %.
  • Bypass protein if yield exceeds 10 L/day — supplies intestinal-delivered amino acids beyond what rumen microbes can produce
  • High-quality maize silage as the forage anchor — denser energy than green fodder
  • Concentrated protein blendsoybean meal anchor with cotton seed cake for cost balance
  • Mineral mixture at 150–200 g/day for high-yielders, never skipped

Our feeding lactating buffalo guide covers the day-by-day ration construction with sample numbers.

Buffalo-specific management priorities

Three things matter disproportionately for buffalo compared to cow:

  1. Wallowing pond or sprinkler cooling — buffaloes lose significantly more milk to summer heat than cows. A simple brick-lined wallowing pond (₹15,000–40,000) is one of the highest-ROI investments for a buffalo dairy. Without it, expect a 25–35% yield drop in May–June.
  2. Careful close-up dry period — Murrah and Jaffrabadi buffaloes giving 10+ L/day are highly vulnerable to milk fever at calving. The dry cow management protocol applies just as strongly to buffalo as cows.
  3. Iodine and copper supplementation — buffaloes are more often deficient in iodine and copper than cattle in many Indian regions. Use a mineral mixture that explicitly meets NDDB's trace-mineral spec.
